We use the Google Tag Manager provided by Google Inc. (1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA) for our website. This Tag Manager is one of many helpful marketing tools offered by Google. Through Google Tag Manager, we can centrally integrate and manage code snippets from various tracking tools that we use on our website.
Below, we will explain in more detail what Google Tag Manager does, why we use it, and how data is processed.
Google Tag Manager is an organisational tool that allows us to centrally integrate and manage website tags via a user interface. Tags are small code segments that, for instance, record (track) your activity on our website. These JavaScript code snippets are embedded in our website’s source code. The tags often originate from Google’s own products like Google Ads or Google Analytics, but third-party tags can also be integrated and managed via the Tag Manager. These tags perform various functions – they can collect browser data, feed marketing tools with data, embed buttons, set cookies, or even track users across multiple websites.
As the saying goes, “Well-organised is half the battle won!” – and this applies to maintaining our website as well. To optimise our site for you and others interested in our products and services, we use various tracking tools such as Google Analytics. These tools provide us with valuable insights into user interests, areas for improvement, and potential target audiences. To enable this tracking, we need to embed JavaScript code into our website. While we could add each code snippet individually to the source code, that would be time-consuming and hard to manage. That’s why we use Google Tag Manager. It allows us to integrate and manage all necessary scripts from one location. Additionally, the Tag Manager features an intuitive user interface that doesn’t require any programming skills. This helps us keep our tag setup organised and efficient.
The Tag Manager itself is a domain that neither sets cookies nor stores any data. It simply manages the implemented tags. The actual data is collected by the individual tags of various web analytics tools. Google Tag Manager merely transmits the data to these tools without storing it.
However, the situation is different for the integrated tags of tools like Google Analytics. Depending on the analytics tool, various data about your web behaviour may be collected, stored and processed via cookies. Please refer to our privacy texts for more detailed information on each analytics and tracking tool used on our website.
In our account settings for Tag Manager, we have authorised Google to receive anonymised data from us. This relates solely to the use and functionality of our Tag Manager account, not to the personal data collected via the code snippets. We allow Google and selected others to receive anonymised data to compile benchmarking reports. Despite thorough research, we were unable to determine exactly what aggregated and anonymised data is shared. In any case, Google removes all information that could identify our website. The data is aggregated with anonymised data from hundreds of other websites to identify user trends as part of benchmarking. Benchmarking involves comparing one’s results with those of competitors, helping to optimise processes based on collected data.
If Google stores data, it is saved on Google’s own servers, which are located around the world, predominantly in the United States. You can find detailed information about the locations of Google’s data centres at: https://www.google.com/about/datacenters/inside/locations/?hl=de
For the specific storage durations of individual tracking tools, please refer to our separate privacy texts for each tool.
Google Tag Manager itself does not set cookies and merely manages the tags of various tracking websites. Please consult our privacy texts related to each individual tool for detailed instructions on how to delete or manage your data.
Google is an active participant in the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield Framework, which ensures the correct and secure transfer of personal data. Further details can be found at: https://www.privacyshield.gov/participant?id=a2zt000000001L5AAI&tid=311141511. For more information about Google Tag Manager, we recommend reading the FAQs at: https://www.google.com/intl/de/tagmanager/faq.html.
Clicking the following opt-out link prevents Google from recording any further visits to this website via Google Analytics:
Please note: If you delete your cookies, use incognito/private mode, or switch browsers, data collection will resume.
We use the analytics and tracking tool Google Analytics (GA) by the American company Google LLC (1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA) on our website. Google Analytics collects data about your actions on our website. For example, if you click on a link, this action is recorded in a cookie and sent to Google Analytics. Using the reports we receive from Google Analytics, we can better tailor our website and services to your needs.
Below, we will provide more details about this tracking tool, especially which data is stored and how you can prevent this.
Google Analytics is a tracking tool used for analysing data traffic on our website. For Google Analytics to work, a tracking code is embedded into our website’s code. When you visit our site, this code records various actions you take. As soon as you leave the site, the data is sent to Google Analytics servers and stored there.
Google processes the data and we receive reports on user behaviour. These can include the following types of reports:
We want to offer you the best possible service through our website. The statistics and data from Google Analytics help us to continuously improve our service.
The collected data provides us with a clear understanding of our website’s strengths and weaknesses. On the one hand, we can optimise the site to make it easier for people to find us via Google. On the other hand, it helps us better understand you as a user, so we can tailor our content and services accordingly. The data also enables us to carry out marketing activities in a more targeted and cost-effective way. After all, it only makes sense to show our products and services to people who are genuinely interested.
Google Analytics uses a tracking code to generate a random, unique ID that is associated with your browser cookie. This allows Google Analytics to recognise you as a new user. When you visit our site again, you will be identified as a returning user. All data collected is saved together with this user ID, enabling the analysis of pseudonymised user profiles.
Your interactions on our website are measured using identifiers such as cookies and app instance IDs. Interactions include all actions taken on the site. If you also use other Google systems (e.g. a Google account), data generated by Google Analytics may be linked with third-party cookies. Google does not share Analytics data unless permitted by the website operator. However, legal requirements may create exceptions.
Here are some of the cookies used by Google Analytics:
Name | Purpose | Expiry |
---|---|---|
_ga | Used to distinguish visitors. | After 2 years |
_gid | Also used to distinguish visitors. | After 24 hours |
gat_gtag_UA | Used to throttle request rate. If GA is provided via Tag Manager, the name is dc_gtm. | After 1 minute |
AMP_TOKEN | Contains a token for retrieving a Client ID from AMP service. | Between 30 seconds and 1 year |
__utma | Used to track behaviour and measure performance. | After 2 years |
__utmt | Throttles request rate. | After 10 minutes |
__utmb | Identifies new sessions. | After 30 minutes |
__utmc | Determines new sessions for returning visitors. Session cookie. | Until browser is closed |
__utmz | Identifies the traffic source. | After 6 months |
__utmv | Stores custom user data. | After 2 years |
Note: This list is not exhaustive as Google regularly updates the cookies it uses.
This overview is non-exhaustive and intended for general guidance only.
Google operates servers worldwide, with most located in the US. Therefore, your data is generally stored on American servers. The location of Google’s data centres can be found at: https://www.google.com/about/datacenters/inside/locations/?hl=de
Your data is distributed across physical storage devices to enhance retrieval speed and protection from manipulation. Each Google data centre has appropriate emergency systems in place. Even if hardware fails or natural disasters occur, the risk of service interruption remains minimal.
By default, Google Analytics stores user data for 26 months, after which it is automatically deleted. However, we can configure the retention period and choose from the following:
After the set time, data is deleted monthly. This retention applies to data linked to cookies, user IDs, and advertising IDs (e.g., from the DoubleClick domain). Reporting results are based on aggregated data, which is stored independently of user data.
Under EU data protection law, you have the right to access, update, delete, or restrict the processing of your data. You can prevent Google Analytics from using your data by installing the browser add-on for deactivating GA JavaScript (ga.js, analytics.js, dc.js):
https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout?hl=de
Please note: This only disables data collection by Google Analytics.
If you want to manage cookies in general, here are instructions for major browsers:
